Getting started — ArcGIS Online

Two ways to begin, then one decision: how the Locate Points layer gets into your organisation. LocateIQ is already a registered application on ArcGIS Online, so there is nothing for an administrator to set up first.

Sign up here

Start a 7-day trial on the web, then sign in on the app. Card up front, first charge on day 7, cancel any time before it.

Download LocateIQ, sign in with your existing ArcGIS account, and start a trial from the account screen.

Signing in needs no configuration — the Portal URL is already https://www.arcgis.com and the Client ID is pre-filled. ArcGIS Configuration on the sign-in screen is for Enterprise portals only.

1 The layers LocateIQ needs

Only one layer is required. The rest are optional and can be added later.

Locate Points

Required

Every locate the app captures. Without it there is nowhere to collect to.

AGM Points

Optional

Above-ground markers and transformation points.

Photo Points

Optional

Geotagged photos captured alongside a locate.

Utility Layers

Optional

Gas, electric, water, sewer, telecom mains and services, plus a dig-area polygon.

2 Your account has to be able to publish

A Creator user type with the Publisher role. Anything less can sign in and view, but cannot create a feature service or write a locate back.

Three ways to get the layers in place

Pick one. All three end with a web map the app can collect into.

In the app · easiest

Create New Map

LocateIQ builds a new web feature service containing Locate Points, AGM, Photo Points and the utility layers, then creates a web map and assigns them to it.

Nothing to prepare — sign in, choose Create New Map, name it.

In the app

Import an existing map

Already have a web map? Import it, then add Locate Points (and optionally AGM and Photo Points) either as a separate new feature service added to that map, or as new layers inside the service the map already uses.

Use this when your utility data already lives in ArcGIS and you only need somewhere to collect.

In ArcGIS Online

Publish from a file

Publish the schema yourself, then import the resulting map in the app. Ready-made file geodatabases — WGS84, with the locate-point fields and coded-value dropdowns already set up.

Have ArcGIS Pro? Use the full bundle

GDB + README + symbology — the app's flag markers on the IQ-score ramp as a Pro .lyrx. Publish to ArcGIS Online from Pro.

Locate Points only + AGM & Photo Points + utility layers

Browser only? Use the AGOL build

GDB alone, for uploading straight to Content › New item. No symbology — the layer draws with ArcGIS defaults until you style it.

Locate Points only + AGM & Photo Points + utility layers

Or a single layer as Shapefile / GeoJSON:

Whichever route you take, the layer must allow editing — Create, Update and Delete. A read-only layer imports and draws perfectly, and then silently never receives a locate. It is the single most common setup problem.

3 Collect one locate and check it arrived

Capture a point, then open the same layer in ArcGIS Online. If the point is there with its attributes, the setup is correct — one successful round trip proves the whole chain.
